At least 1,000 new local jobs are edging closer after Wollondilly Shire Council backed a draft Planning Proposal, with conditions, to unlock new employment lands in Picton.

The proposal spans sites along Argyle Street, Stilton Lane and Wonga Road, and builds on strong recent momentum: Wollondilly has added 3,500 jobs in five years, a 25% increase, lifting the jobs-to-residents ratio by 8%.

Mayor Matt Gould said local jobs remain the priority.

“Supporting local business to create local jobs is a key priority because it gives our residents opportunities and can reduce the daily grind for those keen to work close to home,” he said.

Council agreed the proponent-led plan showed “strategic merit,” but stressed safeguards must come first.

“Any development in this location needs to have high regard for heritage, landscape and environmental outcomes,” Cr Gould said.

Protections would include view and heritage controls, capped building heights, and a requirement that Sydney Water has a clear wastewater delivery plan. Traffic flagged during community consultation will be reassessed using the latest modelling with Transport for NSW.

Next, the proposal heads to the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure for Gateway Determination, with conditions including a Contributions Plan, updated traffic analysis, and further consultation with local knowledge holders.

If outstanding issues are addressed, Cr Gould says it plainly: “We need to encourage employment opportunities locally… this would be a great outcome for the Shire.”
