Camden Council has secured a $1 million State Government grant to make the Elyard Street precinct in Narellan safer, more welcoming and easier to navigate, with improved lighting, upgraded bus stops and new public art.
“This investment is about creating places where everyone feels safe, comfortable and confident to walk, catch public transport and spend time, no matter the time of day,” said Camden Mayor Therese Fedeli.
The funding, accepted at Council’s Ordinary Meeting, comes through Transport for NSW’s Safer Cities: Her Way 2 Program, which supports projects that improve the perception of safety in public spaces and around transport hubs, particularly for women, girls and gender-diverse people.
Rather than imposing a fixed design, Council will work closely with the community to shape the project through workshops and guided “walkshops”, ensuring local experiences directly influence the final plans.
“By working directly with our community throughout the design process, we’ll be able to deliver meaningful improvements that respond to local experiences and enhance the way people use and enjoy the Elyard Street precinct,” Fedeli said.
The project aims to deliver brighter streets, better public transport facilities and vibrant public art, helping create a precinct that is both safer and more inviting for residents and visitors alike.
Fedeli also thanked Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison MP and Member for Camden Sally Quinnell MP for supporting the successful grant application.
