“The new Civic Plaza will strengthen the heart of Camden and provide the community infrastructure needed to support our growing population,” says Camden MP Sally Quinnell, after the NSW Government announced a $3 million investment to help deliver the long-awaited Camden Civic Plaza.
The funding is part of a $54 million statewide investment through the Faster Assessments Incentive Program (FAIP), rewarding councils that are speeding up development approvals while supporting housing growth.
The new plaza will replace the existing building at 27 John Street, creating a vibrant public space featuring an outdoor stage alongside the Civic Centre and Memorial Garden.
Connected to Camden Library, Camden Museum and Alan Baker Art Gallery, the project will establish a central cultural precinct for markets, festivals, performances and community celebrations.
Quinnell said Camden’s rapid growth made investment in community infrastructure just as important as new housing.
“As more families choose to call Camden home, it’s important that we continue creating places where people can come together, celebrate local events and enjoy everything our town centre has to offer,” she said.
Camden Council qualified for the funding after exceeding the NSW Government’s development assessment benchmark, joining 35 councils recognised for significantly reducing approval times.
Planning Minister Paul Scully said the program rewarded councils helping address the state’s housing challenge.
“We are rewarding councils that are cutting assessment times and helping deliver the homes NSW needs, because faster decisions mean people can move into new homes sooner,” he said.
The Faster Assessments Incentive Program combines state funding with council contributions to deliver more than $106 million in local infrastructure projects across NSW, ensuring community facilities keep pace with housing growth.
