More than 4,400 first home buyers across Macarthur-Hume have been helped into home ownership through the Australian Government’s 5% Deposit Scheme since 2022.
New figures show 4,403 locals have used the scheme, which allows eligible first home buyers to purchase a property with a deposit of as little as five per cent while avoiding lenders mortgage insurance (LMI).
Federal Member for Macarthur Dr Mike Freelander said the figures showed the scheme was helping local families overcome one of the biggest barriers to buying a home.
“The opportunity to purchase your own home is the goal for thousands of Macarthur residents and with the support of our Federal Labor Government, we are helping make this a reality for over 4,403 locals,” he said.
“We know that for too long the housing market has been stacked against those trying to enter the market and without this scheme many wouldn’t be able to enter the market at all.”
Local take-up has been particularly strong in postcode 2560, with 1,562 buyers supported, followed by 2179 with 564, 2570 with 530 and 2566 with 312.
The scheme was expanded on 1 October 2025, removing income caps and limits on the number of places while increasing property price caps.
Nationally, more than 280,000 Australians have been supported through the scheme since 2022, including more than 102,000 in the year since it was expanded.
Government figures estimate buyers have collectively saved more than $2.5 billion in LMI, including $1.4 billion over the past year. For someone purchasing a median-priced Australian home with a five per cent deposit, the estimated LMI saving is about $23,700.
The scheme forms part of the Federal Government’s broader housing program aimed at increasing housing supply and improving access to home ownership.
