An acclaimed independent Australian film exploring identity, multiculturalism and modern family life in Western Sydney is set to reach audiences nationwide when From All Sides premieres on SBS World Movies on 20 July.
The award-winning feature, written and directed by Australian filmmaker Bina Bhattacharya and partly filmed in Campbelltown, follows married multiracial couple Anoushka and Pascal as they navigate parenthood, careers and a discreet open relationship while raising two teenagers in suburban Western Sydney.
After earning the Runner-Up Audience Award at the Queer Screen Film Festival, a theatrical season at Cinema Nova and selection for the Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival Goes to Cannes Showcase, the film was acquired by Special Broadcasting Service for national broadcast.
Bhattacharya said she was thrilled the film would now be available to viewers across Australia.
“This film has always been about reflecting the new face of middle Australia: multicultural, messy, ironic and full of contradictions,” she said.
She added the broadcast comes “at a time when debates about multiculturalism and public broadcasting are even more urgent than when I wrote it.”
Set against the backdrop of multicultural Western Sydney, the provocative drama explores race, sexuality, class and cultural expectations through the eyes of a middle-aged Indian-Australian woman, played by Monique Kalmar.
Since its festival debut, From All Sides has built a strong grassroots following through community screenings and word of mouth, praised for its honest, humorous and unapologetically Australian portrayal of contemporary multicultural life.
