Campbelltown will come together this July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as NAIDOC Week returns from Sunday 5 to Sunday 12 July.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, with the theme 50 Years of Deadly honouring the Elders, artists, organisers and community leaders who have helped shape and strengthen this important national celebration.
Mayor of Campbelltown Darcy Lound said NAIDOC Week was a special opportunity for the community to come together in respect, recognition and celebration.
“NAIDOC Week gives us the chance to celebrate the knowledge, culture and achievements of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, while giving everyone the opportunity to come together in celebration,” Cr Lound said.
Locals are invited to attend a Community Flag Raising Ceremony at the Campbelltown City Council Forecourt from 9.30am on Monday 6 July, followed by a procession through Queen Street and Bradbury Underpass to Campbelltown Billabong Parklands.
A Community Connection Day will then be held at Campbelltown Billabong Parklands from 11am to 3pm, featuring stalls, cultural activities and a complimentary BBQ.
Residents are also encouraged to support the annual NAIDOC Week Touch Football Day, hosted by NSW Police on Wednesday 8 July at Seddon Park, Glenfield.
