Earth Hour Celebrated

Campbelltown Council celebrated Earth Hour with a reflection on traditional and contemporary ways of connecting with the natural environment.

“We’ve got to look after not only the people but the planet too, in a way that we respect it,” said Uncle Ivan Wellington, Aboriginal elder.

For Maryjane McKibbin Schwenke from Matavai Cultural Arts, Earth Hour was “everything
that we work towards here in Australia, for people to hear our stories”.

She said that their islands were at the forefront of climate change. “A lot of our islands have really perished. There have been villages that have been uprooted and moved further inland
because of climate change.”
