Campbelltown’s writers are being challenged to turn their ideas into award-winning stories, with entries now open for the 2026 Fisher’s Ghost Writing Prize.
Open to people who live, work or study in Campbelltown, the annual competition invites entries in short story, narrative non-fiction memoir and poetry, all inspired by this year’s theme, “Years in the Making”.
Mayor Darcy Lound said the prize continued to grow in both popularity and quality.
“2026 marks the sixth running of the Fisher’s Ghost Writing Prize and the quality of works continues to reach new heights each year. This is a fantastic opportunity for Campbelltown’s creative talent to challenge themselves,” he said.
After attracting a record 150-plus entries last year, organisers are hoping to set another benchmark in 2026.
The writing prize is a highlight of the annual Festival of Fisher’s Ghost, with this year’s event carrying extra significance as it marks both the 200th anniversary of the legend of Fred Fisher’s Ghost and the 70th anniversary of the Festival of Fisher’s Ghost.
Delivered by Campbelltown City Library and managed and judged by WestWords, the competition provides emerging and established local writers with an opportunity to showcase their work and connect with the wider literary community.
WestWords Executive Director Michael Campbell said Campbelltown’s literary talent continued to flourish.
“Creativity is thriving in Campbelltown, and we look forward to being wowed by the writing that arises from this year’s theme,” he said.
Entries are open across four categories: Adult, Grades 4–6, Grades 7–9 and Grades 10–12. Adult winners will receive $300, while student winners will receive $100, with prizes also awarded to highly commended entries.
To help aspiring writers prepare, Eagle Vale Library and Campbelltown Library, HJ Daley, will host a series of writing workshops during the July school holidays.
Entries close on Monday, 7 September, with winners to be announced later this year at the Fisher’s Ghost Writing Prize awards ceremony.
