Camden residents are being encouraged to grab their binoculars and discover the remarkable birdlife in their own backyard as Aussie Bird Count Week returns from 19–25 October.

As part of Australia’s largest birdwatching and citizen science event, Camden Council will host two free guided walks: at Harrington Park Lake on Tuesday 20 October from 5pm and Camden Town Farm on Saturday 24 October from 7.30am.

Bird specialist Mark Fuller from Avianation will lead the walks, helping families and beginners identify local species and learn more about Camden’s birdlife.

“These walks are designed for families and beginners, so they’re a great opportunity to get outdoors, learn something new and discover the incredible birdlife we have right here in Camden,” Mayor of Camden Vince Ferreri said.

Council will provide binoculars, while participants are encouraged to download the free Aussie Bird Count App to record their sightings.

“Every bird sighting counts. By recording what we see through the Aussie Bird Count, we can all can contribute to a much bigger picture of Australia’s bird populations and biodiversity,” Ferreri said.

The Harrington Park Lake walk will offer an added wildlife experience, with participants able to see the endangered Grey-headed Flying-fox camp and watch the colony’s evening fly-out at dusk.

Those unable to join a guided walk can still participate by spending time spotting and recording birds in their backyard, neighbourhood or local park.

“And if you’re not able to attend one of the guided walks, you can still take part in Aussie Bird Count Week!” Ferreri said.

Both walks follow Council pathways and are suitable for people with a moderate level of fitness, with parking and toilets nearby.
