A landmark partnership between Western Sydney University and TAFE NSW is breaking down barriers between vocational training and university, saving students time and up to $18,000.
From February 2026, students completing selected Fee Free TAFE courses in high-demand areas including nursing, health, early childhood education, IT and construction will be guaranteed entry into a related Bachelor degree at Western Sydney University, starting at the Bankstown City campus.
A single enrolment package means automatic credit for TAFE study, cutting degree time by up to one-third plus wrap-around support from dedicated Success Coaches to ease the transition from VET to university.
Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor George Williams AO said the partnership delivers real opportunity.
“This pathway program is a great example of how TAFE NSW and the University can work together to create real opportunities for students,” he said.
TAFE NSW Managing Director Chloe Read said it challenges the old idea of choosing one pathway over another.
“It doesn’t necessarily have to be one or the other when it comes to further education – there are more pathways where students can enjoy the best of both worlds,” she said.
Federal Education Minister Jason Clare said the benefits are immediate.
“This will save you time and it will save you money. It can knock a year off a degree and save up to $18,000,” he added.
The initiative prioritises critical skills shortages, equity cohorts, and women in construction, with plans to expand across Sydney in 2027, a bold new model for faster, fairer tertiary education.
