More than 170 General Practitioners across South Western and Western Sydney can now prescribe repeat ADHD medication, giving local families faster and more affordable access to treatment under the NSW Government’s landmark ADHD reforms.
Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren welcomed the changes, describing them as a significant step forward for local families.
“This is a long overdue, yet welcomed announcement that will support many families for better and cheaper access for diagnosis and treatment of ADHD,” Warren said.
Introduced in September 2025, the reforms allow trained GPs to issue repeat ADHD prescriptions, reducing reliance on specialist services that have often been burdened by long waiting lists and high out-of-pocket costs.
A recent NSW Government-funded ADHD masterclass in Liverpool saw 60 GPs apply to become continuation prescribers, including 38 from Western and South Western Sydney, with a further 15 local GPs enrolling in the next intake of training beginning in November.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the reforms were focused on improving access to care.
“This is about making access to ADHD treatment and diagnosis cheaper and easier for people,” he said.
The second stage of the reforms is also underway, with 330 GPs across NSW, including 66 from Western and South Western Sydney, now undertaking training to diagnose and treat ADHD, helping to expand access to specialist-level care in the community.
Previously, families often faced lengthy waits and significant costs to see non-GP specialists, delaying treatment that can be critical to a child’s learning, development and mental health.
Park said increasing the number of trained GPs would make a real difference for growing communities.
“By rolling out training masterclasses in regions like South West and Western Sydney, we are ensuring there are trained GPs ready to provide care to everyone, no matter where they live,” he said.
NSW Health will continue to fund training for participating GPs, with applications remaining open for future training rounds and for doctors wishing to become continuation prescribers.
