A lifetime of quiet service to community, science and heritage has earned Camden local Joanne O’Brien this year’s Camden’s Local Woman of the Year honour.

The award recognises women across New South Wales who make a meaningful difference in their communities. This year 94 women were nominated by local MPs as part of NSW Women’s Week (2–8 March), celebrating leadership, advocacy and everyday acts of service.

Jo O’Brien was nominated by Member for Camden Sally Quinnell in recognition of her extraordinary volunteer work.

“I’m incredibly proud to see Jo O’Brien recognised as a role model in our community,” Quinnell said.

“Jo is dedicated to helping and encouraging others. The countless hours she has selflessly invested have greatly improved our area, and the support she gives to our past and present generations guides the future of Camden.”

O’Brien moved to Camden in 2003 when her eldest son began school and quickly immersed herself in community life. Her passion for science led her to help run the Superior Scientist program at Camden Public School alongside Dr Deidre Tronson OAM since 2014, mentoring Stage 3 students as they prepare projects for the school’s annual Science Expo.

With a Bachelor of Science and a career as an analytical chemist, O’Brien has helped inspire a new generation of young scientists.

But science is only part of her story.

A passionate advocate for local history, O’Brien has played a leading role in preserving Camden’s heritage through extensive volunteer work with the Camden Area Family History Society and the Camden Historical Society. She has served as Secretary, President and Editor, while also contributing to Council’s Heritage Advisory Committee.

She also writes regularly for heritage journals and leads guided walking tours that bring Camden’s past to life.

“I am eternally thankful for Jo’s work and commend her for everything she has done and continues to do,” Quinnell said.

O’Brien will be formally recognised alongside other recipients at the 2026 NSW Women of the Year Awards ceremony at Sydney’s International Convention Centre on 5 March.

NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison said the awards celebrate the extraordinary contributions of everyday women.

“The Local Woman of the Year 2026 recognises and honours the contributions of everyday women and girls across New South Wales who are making a difference in their communities,” she said.

“Congratulations and thank you to every Local Woman of the Year – this recognition is truly well deserved.”
