As the 2024/25 storm season officially kicks off, Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren is urging residents to prepare for an increased risk of storms, with the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) still managing the aftermath of recent wild winds that swept across the state.
Praising the efforts of SES volunteers, Mr Warren said, “I would like to thank our hardworking SES volunteers who have been out in force recently. We know we can count on them to support communities across NSW throughout this storm season.”
Storm season traditionally spans from September to April, a period marked by frequent storms, strong winds, and heavy rain. Over the past weeks, NSW has been battered by severe winds, with 1,200 volunteers responding to over 2,000 incidents. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that the risk of extreme storms is heightened, particularly at the start of this season.
In the past year, the NSW SES has responded to more than 21,000 storm-related incidents, including 1,358 in Wyong, 1,016 in Gosford, 904 in Sutherland, 835 in Wollongong, and 680 in Ku-ring-gai. Residents can now monitor storm activity using the Hazards Near Me app, which also provides alerts for floods, fires, and tsunamis.
NSW SES Acting Commissioner Debbie Platz APM reminded residents to remain vigilant. “Severe weather can happen at any time, and while the risk of storms is increased, we’ve seen this year that they can occur year-round. I encourage communities to take simple steps to protect their homes and families.”
To help residents prepare, the NSW SES advises:
- Secure loose items outside, trim trees and branches near your home, clean gutters, and move cars away from trees.
- If caught in a storm, seek shelter indoors, avoid sheltering under trees, and stay away from powerlines.
- Create an emergency plan for storms and floods.
- Download the Hazards Near Me app and set up watch zones.
- For assistance, call the NSW SES at 132 500 or Triple 0 in an emergency.
Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib emphasized the importance of early preparation. “As we enter storm season, I urge all communities to be aware of their risks and prepare early,” he said. “It’s crucial to have a plan, get your home ready, and know what to do if impacted by storms.”
