Families in Appin have a brand-new place to relax, play and connect with nature, with the NSW Government officially opening the 17-hectare Toggerai Park as part of its Parks for People program.
“Appin is one of the fastest-growing communities in New South Wales and locals deserve the same quality green spaces as anywhere else in Sydney,” Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren said.
Located just north of Appin town centre, the former pastureland has been transformed into a vibrant public space featuring walking trails, nature-based play areas, picnic facilities and open green space for the growing community.
“Toggerai Park is exactly what this community has been waiting for – a place for families to come together, for kids to play and explore, and for residents to connect with the natural environment right on their doorstep,” Warren said.
Delivered in partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council, the park has been designed to protect surrounding bushland and nearby koala habitat while creating new opportunities for recreation and social connection.
Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully said the park demonstrates the Government’s commitment to delivering quality public spaces alongside new housing.
“Great neighbourhoods need great public spaces, and Toggerai Park gives Appin families a fantastic new place to spend time together, get active and enjoy the outdoors,” he said.
The park includes one kilometre of walking trails, a lyrebird-themed playground, flying fox, swings, picnic shelters with barbecues, accessible amenities, a car park and preserved native vegetation.
Its name, Toggerai – the Dharawal name for the neighbouring Georges River – and the signature lyrebird play structure celebrate the area’s Aboriginal heritage and cultural significance.
“Toggerai Park is delivering high-quality green space that this community will enjoy for generations to come,” Scully said.
The community is invited to celebrate the opening at a free Community Day on Saturday 19 July, featuring a fun run, lawn games, children’s activities, food and refreshments.
