The Australian Book Industry Awards (ABIAs) have recognized Welcome to Sex by Dr. Melissa Kang and Yumi Stynes, part of the popular “Welcome to” series, by awarding it Book of the Year for Older Children.

This is the second time a book from this series has won, with Welcome to Your Period winning in 2020. Welcome to Sex was also shortlisted for Social Impact Book of the Year and Audiobook of the Year at the ABIAs.

The book faced a temporary ban from major retailers due to a campaign by fringe activists, leading to media attention and a surge in public support, which significantly boosted its sales. The “Welcome to” series now boasts over a quarter of a million copies in print worldwide in 14 languages.

Kate Brown, Managing Director of Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing, emphasized the importance of making such educational resources available, noting that book bans are not practiced in Australia.

“The overwhelming support and commercial success of Welcome to Sex highlights the importance of families being able to access the books they need, when they need them,” she said.

Published in 2023, Welcome to Sex aims to provide safe, consensual, and healthy sexual education for teens, featuring interviews with health experts and genuine questions from adolescents.

Hardie Grant’s Publishing Director, Marisa Pintado, highlighted the book’s importance for providing accurate sexual information to teenagers, contrasting it with the unreliable information found on the internet. She praised the collaboration between ABC personality Yumi Stynes and teen magazine advice columnist Dr Melissa Kang, celebrating their fourth book together.
